Until the early-mid sixties, most music was recorded in mono, with the intention of being reproduced by one speaker. Owing to Song Athletics founder Will’s interest in monaural sound (he’s deaf in his right ear), we collaborated with Concept Object to design and build a singular, large-cabinet loudspeaker for the specific intention of reproducing monophonic recordings.

The design pays homage to the larger domestic corner/tube radio speakers, and takes advantage of its singularity in order to maximise cabinet volume and optimise component choice (a stereo pair would have to be half as good for the same price…).

The result is a responsive and detailed speaker that pairs beautifully with mono recordings, which by their very nature have been captured with a special focus on balance, timbre and clarity.
