I’ll be my own mirror, the debut EP from London-based composer/violinist FLOCO is a corporeal incantation of waking dreams. Transitional visions imagined through ambient driven, electronic soundscapes with folk music at the very heart.

After collaborating and traveling extensively with peers like Martha Skye Murphy and the London Ambient Orchestra, she has settled to confluence all her influences and experiences into this captivating body of work. Building from what she already has.

Tender and spacious, it glistens with introspection; an uncanny landscape of both processed and found sounds sews a patchwork of FLOCO’s dream-state panorama. Coalescing digital and analogue with astute manipulation, hand-built diapason organs or briefly borrowed flugel horns are passed through a veil to an untouched landscape. Sonic grain is wrought and layered over a bed of intimacy and enchantment where abstracted vocals are treated as instruments, building to something more real than the sum of what she has.

Capturing commutes along the canal, Florence’s violin intersperses the refractions of dream-like kodachrome in opener Portals. This meditation on addiction and disconnection is a soft invite into FLOCO’s recitational house. Slow Day draws its power from the frustration and intuition with which it was written. FLOCO says, “I was returning to my teenage years of playing the guitar in my bedroom without second-guessing what comes out. It is reflective, desperate & restrained anger, almost written like a letter.” About You acts as a folk lullaby - built from the bones of the hymns and traditional songs FLOCO sang as a child, accompanied by the tactile homemade semitonal glass harp made by sound artist Lee Scott Newcombe, indulging the EP’s childlike liminality.

Born from a collection of improvisation and electronic experimentation, I’ll be my own mirror arrives as a personal milestone of FLOCO’s intuition. Writing, producing, and mixing the EP herself, she taps into the very source of a truly beautiful creative duality.
